Molecular hydrogen is a powerful antioxidant, that defends cells and genes from damage and death caused by harmful free radicals. Free radicals are uncharged or unstable molecules, which steal electrons and pull apart pieces of other molecules to gain stability. This can damage DNA, gene signaling and can cause a host of destructive chain reactions. Antioxidants are molecules that safely stabilize free radicals and reduce the amount of damage that can be done. Molecular Hydrogen, in combination with its anti-inflammatory properties, helps to enhance longevity because aging is caused by oxidative stress and inflammation. Molecular hydrogen can be infused in drinking water or applied directly to the skin. Molecular Hydrogen gas can be safely inhaled when mixed with oxygen ( in a ratio of 2/3 hydrogen to 1/3 oxygen) at a concentration of less than 4%.
In 2007, a landmark research article was published in NatureMedicine documenting a clinical study where MolecularHydrogen was inhaled ( in a concentration of less than 4 %) in animals. The result was a substantial decrease in damage to the brain after ischemia/reperfusion injury, and in stressed cells, the dissolved H2gas reduced the amount of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) generated in both the cytoplasm and the nucleus. Additionally, H2was shown to protect the DNA from oxidation and cellular lipid membranes from peroxidation, ultimately preventing cellular death in a dose-dependent fashion.
To date, 500 scientific articles have been published and 1600 studies have been done on more than 170 different models of human and animal diseases, which confirm that hydrogen has therapeutic potential. There are currently 150 different diseases in which molecular hydrogen appears to exert a beneficial effect. Some of the most common include:
